The nightmare scenario for Democrats is showing signs of becoming a reality with their base determined to pick an avowed socialist to run against President Trump.
Following his win in New Hampshire in Tuesday’s primary, Bernie Sanders is now looking to add to his delegate total as the race shifts to more demographically diverse states in which his message is expected to resonate.
And according to a new poll from Morning Consult, Sanders now has a double-digit lead nationally which makes him the front-runner for the party’s nomination.
Sanders has increased his lead over the sinking Joe Biden, who is still being touted by many as the only Democrat who has a chance to defeat Trump next November despite his gaffes, confrontations with voters and obvious senility.
Via The Hill, “Sanders builds double-digit national lead: poll”:
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has opened up a double-digit lead over his next closest rivals in a new national survey.
The latest Morning Consult poll finds Sanders at 29 percent support, followed by former Vice President Joe Biden at 19 percent and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at 18 percent. Sanders gained 3 points in the poll after winning the New Hampshire primary this week, while Biden lost 3 points after a disastrous fifth-place showing.
The latest poll confirms Sanders’s status as the front-runner in the race for the Democratic nomination. In addition to winning New Hampshire, Sanders pulled more votes than anyone else at the Iowa caucuses, although it appears that former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg will narrowly win the delegates edge in the Hawkeye State.
Buttigieg finished a close second in New Hampshire and held steady in the Morning Consult survey at 11 percent support. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who finished a distant fourth place in New Hampshire, came in at 10 percent in the new poll.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), whose surprise third-place finish in New Hampshire launched her into the thick of the race, is at 5 percent support, picking up 2 points from the prior survey.
The poll is terrible news for Biden because in addition to Bernie’s lead, it also shows that the critical black demographic that the former vice president took for granted is starting to abandon him.
According to Morning Consult:
Among black voters — one of Biden’s strongest blocs of support — confidence in his chances of beating Trump fell 10 points, to 21 percent. Roughly a third of black voters (32 percent) said Sanders is Democrats’ best chance to beat Trump, up 9 points from last week…
Biden’s abysmal showing in the first two voting states has his campaign heading into a critical stretch, especially in South Carolina where lunchbucket Joe is counting on black support to reverse his negative momentum.
But the state that has long been described as his “firewall” may not be such a sure thing anymore with black voters now starting to look toward Bernie as the candidate with the best shot in the general election.
Sanders has also become increasingly demagogic in terms of race-baiting, a classic tactic of communists and one that could pay off for the 78-year-old now that overwhelmingly white Iowa and New Hampshire are in the rear view mirror.
It is widely believed among the party establishment and their media shills that Trump would make roadkill out of the openly socialist Sanders in an electoral landslide of historic proportions.
